LESSON PLANNING

Five Questions to Guide Planning

  1. What am I going to do?
  2. Why am I going to do it?
  3. What do I need to do it?
  4. How am I going to do it?
  5. How will I know I’ve done it?

Five Questions to Guide Planning

  1. What am I going to do?
    1. Goals—long-term learning outcomes. (Students become critical thinkers.)
    2. Instructional objectives—immediate outcomes of instruction (Students are able to distinguish between fact and opinion)
    3. Objectives give:
      1. direction for instruction
      2. guidelines for assessment
      3. way for the selection of methods
      4. ABCD’s of Objectives
      5. Audience—What are the learners expected to do?
      6. Behavior—focuses on overt or observable performances
      7. Conditions—situation under which the learners are able to perform the outcome
      8. Degree—how well must the learner perform

2. Why am I going to do it?

“The first object of any act of learning . . . is that it should serve us in the future.” (Bruner)

Even a well-constructed objective may be meaningless.

  1. What do I need to do it?
    1. Materials
    1. Human resources
  2. How am I going to do it?
    1. Procedures
    1. Sequencing
  3. How will I know I’ve done it?
    1. Assessing student performance
    1. Self reflection
    1. Parts of a Lesson Plan—Model 1
