THE VARIATIONS OF JIGSAW
Basic Jigsaw
Procedures
Step 1. Prepare the information or material to be learned
- Divide the information that needs to be presented into roughly equal parts (typically four). Label these #1, #2, #3, #4
Step 2. Distribute the information
- In each cooperative group, each individual is assigned one part of the information. (use materials monitors to distribute the information)
Step 3. Individual students work
- Each student reads his or her information
- The student decides on the 3 – 5 most important details to learn from this information, and
- The individual student decides the best way to teach this information to the cooperative group.
Step 4. Students teach
- Each student has an assigned amount of time to present the information to the cooperative group usually 1 – 2 minutes.
Step 5. Assessment
- The teacher decides on an appropriate method of assessing the students’ learning. This could be a traditional quiz or an alternative assessment.
Group Jigsaw
Procedures

Step 1. Prepare the information to be learned
- Divide the information that needs to be presented into the number of organized cooperative groups. Label these groups # 1, group #2, group# 3, and so on. For a class of 28 students, the material would be divided into 7 parts, one for each group.
Step 2. Distribute the information
- Each cooperative group is assigned one part of information. (use materials monitors to distribute the information)
Step 3. Cooperative groups work
- Each cooperative group reads their information
- The cooperative group decides on the 3- 5 most important details to learn from this information and
- Decides the best way to teach the information to the class
Step 4. Cooperative groups teach
- Each cooperative group has an assigned amount of time to present the information to the class. All members of the group are expected to participate in the presentation.
Step 5. Assessment
- The teacher decides on an appropriate method of assessing the students’ learning. This could be a traditional quiz or an alternative assessment.
Expert Jigsaw

Procedures
Step 1. Prepare the information or material to be learned
- Divide the information that needs to be presented into roughly equal parts (typically four). Label these #1, #2, #3, and #4
Step 2. Distribute the information
- In each cooperative group, each individual is assigned one part of the information. (use materials monitors to distribute the information)
- Individuals read information and summarize it.
Step 3. Form expert groups
- Now the students form experts groups. Each expert group consists of 3 – 4 individuals who have received the same information. Students with the information labeled # 1 meet together, students with # 2 meet together, and so on. Since you want no more than four students in each expert group, in a large class you could end up with two (or three) groups of students for each set of information.
Step 4. Expert groups work
- Students read the information
- Students decide on the 3-5 most important details to learn from the information and
- Students decide the best way to teach this information to their home groups
Step 5. Experts teach
- Students return to home groups. Each student has an assigned amount of time to present the information to the home group
Step 6. Assessment
- The teacher decides on an appropriate method of assessing the students’ learning. This could be a traditional quiz or an alternative assessment.
